Barcelona fell to a second defeat in three league games as Sevilla excellently exposed the Catalans’ defensive frailties in Seville on Saturday.

Two goals in six second half minutes from Michael Krohn-Deli and Vicente Iborra saw off the champions, who scored a consolation through Neymar’s 74th-minute penalty.

Barca’s defence is dire

There have long been questions over Barca’s defence, with the likes of Javier Mascherano, Marc Bartra and now Jeremy Mathieu far from world class partners for Gerard Pique. This season, teams seem to have worked out how to expose this weakness, with Mathieu unimpressive in the centre-back role at Sevilla.

Part of the problem with the Barca side at the moment is that Mascherano and Sergio Busquets are not offering enough protection to the defence, while also not delivering in an attacking sense. Busquets was particularly poor against Sevilla, and has been in weak form all season.

Barca have now conceded six times in two matches against Sevilla this season, as well as conceding five times to Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup and leaking four goals to Celta Vigo two weeks ago. Clearly, Luis Enrique has a lot of work to do sorting out his defence during the international break.
