Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic is on course to achieve football superstardom at new club Real Madrid. It was the move which caught everyone by surprise, including the La Liga giant’s larger supporter base.

Kovacic was the former Inter starlet destined to create and do big things in his career, the glue that kept the Nerrazzuri side together.

However, his talent and skill caught the eye of the Galacticos, and everyone knows what is likely to happen from there. President Florentino Perez had no hesitations in signing the Croatian on a six-year contract worth 35 million.

Despite the fact the club has a plethora of choice in the midfield/forwards department, the 21-year-old provides the Los Blancos with an added element of creativity and a fresh perspective on the side’s attacking play.

Yet what will be of most importance to the side is his versatility.

Kovacic can slot into numerous positions, including attacking, defensive and central-midfield. Indeed he exhibited such during his time at the Nerazzurri, wherein the 2014-15 Serie A season he played a variety of roles and only missed a total of three matches.

However, it goes without question that Inter transformed the Croatian into a deep-lying playmaker, the likes of which could rival teammate Isco Alarcon. One of his trademark moves is dropping deep to receive the ball and then proceeding to burst forward with darting runs through multiple defender.

His playing characteristics channel that of former AC Milan greats Kaka and Clarence Seedorf, according to former Italian coach Giovanni Trapattoni.

Indeed it seems past players are full of praise for the 21-year-old, fellow Croatian Zvonimir Boban describing him as a “complete player.”

“He has talents that could make him even better than me,” he told Sky Italia in a 2013 interview.

“He is a complete talent that can still grow – he has incredible potential.”

Kovacic’s move to the Spanish giants raised the question of whether he will be able to adapt his style to the faster pace of the La Liga.

While he has become comfortable with the style of the Serie A and Italy, he will no doubt adjust to the play in Spain.

Indeed, Kovacic make his first appearance for the Los Blancos over the weekend, as he replaced Isco in the second-term of their match against newly promoted Sporting Gijon.

He was unable to alter the deadlocked score line, yet slotted into the midfield as expected and showed signs of his eagerness to contribute a team already crammed with some of the world’s best talent.

Coach Rafa Benitez will be looking to add to the prevalent attacking line-up and create alternative options from the usual Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo setups, it has become predictable and does not have the same effect on the opposition.

Kovacic adds another dimension  which will undoubtedly place him in good stead with the compatriots in Benitez’ new plans for the side, as he attempts to make them a strong, cohesive and united unit which can bring back the La Liga crown.
