Jose Mourinho says Wayne Rooney still has a big role to play at Old Trafford despite being dropped to the bench as Manchester United routed Leicester 4-1.

Mourinho’s decision was well received by media personnel, former players and fans after Rooney’s poor start to the season.

Although demoting his captain to the sidelines, the Portuguese manager insists Rooney still holds an important position in the team regardless of his indifferent form.

“He’s a big player for me, a big player for United and a big player for this country,” Mourinho told MUTV following the match.

“I don’t want to say anything else. He’s my man, I trust him completely and he’s as happy as I am at the moment.

“His team won and that’s normal, he’s happy.”

And Mourinho says his team’s performance is the type of style he expects to see from his players.

“We were much more aggressive and pressed higher,” he added.

“The team was quicker to react when the ball was lost and we were very objective, we had lots of fast football.

“We played the way we wanted to play and played really well.

“But the reality is we played very well until the game was closed.”
