Midfielder Joey Barton has never been too far away from controversy in his career and he has not taken long to make the headlines at his new club.

Barton, who only joined Rangers earlier this season, is set to miss the next three weeks after being suspended for an altercation with teammate Andy Halliday following his side’s 5-1 loss to Celtic.

The Scottish giants have told Barton to spend time away from the club, which means he will not feature in training or matches in the upcoming weeks.

Despite issuing an apology following the incident, Rangers initially elected to suspend the 34-year-old for one week.

“Joey Barton has today been suspended by the club and will not return to Ibrox or Auchenhowie for a period of three weeks,” said a statement issued by the club.

“The manager, Mark Warburton, and club believe that time and space is required for both the club and the player to assess all that has happened.

“Neither party will make any further statement or comment on this issue.”
