Joachim Löw: Germany were simply unlucky

German coach Joachim Löw lamented his side’s lack of luck after they were sent packing from Euro 2016 by host nation France.

Their second successive European Championship semi-final exit, Löw said his side did not deserve the bad fortune they received at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille.

“There were too many things that went wrong. We were the better team and have invested a lot,” he said.

“Today we did not have the luck that we needed and we were unfortunate to concede a penalty.”

“In 2012 when we went out, the sides were better than us but today was not the case.”

“There were injured players like [Sami] Khedira and [Mario] Gomez. [Mats] Hummels was suspeneded and that is not easy to compensate. [Jerome] Boateng had to leave the pitch and so there were four good players we could not benefit from in the end.”

Despite the disappointing finish to Euro 2016, Low said there was nothing to blame the players for and was adamant Germany outplayed France.

“There is nothing to blame the players for,” he said.

“I do not say anything about referee’s decisions – you have to accept them. If you see how Schweinsteiger touched the ball, it was in a tenth of a second and the player cannot control that.”

“It is just bad luck and the player has nothing to blame for. You could say the hand should not have been there but there are movements when you go up for the ball you just cannot control.”

“France has succeeded to get to the final and if you win 2-0 you deserve it. I think France will beat Portugal, they have not convinced me.”
