Isaias Sanchez: Grand final the biggest occasion of my career

Adelaide United star Isaias Sanchez has marked Sunday’s A-League grand final as the biggest match of his career and that he prefers Coopers Stadium over Adelaide Oval.

Speaking to the media at training this morning, the Spaniard was asked whether playing away from the home comforts of Coopers Stadium will hurt Adelaide’s chances, he responded: “I don’t think we lose anything, but if I had to choose I prefer to play at Coopers [Stadium].”

As the A-League’s showpiece event edges ever nearer to a sell out attendance, the FFA’s decision to host the match at a bigger venue looks to be a vindicated one.

He remains wary of the occasion ahead, and is certainly not taking it lightly: “This week will be the biggest (of my career) I think,” Isaias said.

“Our mentality before was to play game by game, every game was a final, and of course, this weekend is the biggest final.”

In-form striker Bruce Djite did not take part in the full training session this morning, prompting questions from the media pack but Isaias was quick to dispel any selection problems.

“Some players have some soreness and need to rest a little bit more, but everybody is alright.”

Isaias scored a wonderful free kick against City in the penultimate round of the A-League season to send Adelaide atop the table. His own form, and that of his team has not wavered since.

Adelaide’s aggressive pressing tactic worked wonders against Melbourne City in last Friday night’s 4-1 romp, denying the likes of Aaron Mooy and Anthony Caceres time and space on the ball in midfield. Isaias forecasts a similar approach to dealing with the talent at the Wanderers’ disposal.

“Normally these kind of games, the start is very hard. You need to play intense football, so we will see what happens in the final but I expect the same kind of game” Isaias said.

The creative midfielder will be looking for his side to continue on its winning run to claim Australian football’s ultimate prize.
