Is Danny Ings another underwhelming signing for Liverpool? [VIDEO]

This past week saw Liverpool announce their second signing of the summer, this time highly rated Burnley striker Danny Ings on a free transfer.

Ings put Premier League sides on notice when he scored 21 goals to help Burnley to win promotion in 2013-14, however, the 22-year-old struggled to adapt to the more rigorous competition, only scoring 11 in 35 games as he side were relegated back to the Championship.

Although 11 goals is not that bad of a feat, especially in a debut season, he will need to increase that tally now that he is at Liverpool.

Liverpool are one of the England’s most successful clubs, but have not had much to celebrate about recently. Their last title was the League Cup back in 2011/12, and they made their return (and departure) to the UEFA Champions League last season. Something that can only be put down to one thing. Recruitment.

The likes of Fernando Torres, Luis Suarez and Xabi Alonso have been replaced by Andy Carroll, Rickie Lambert and Charlie Adam.

With no disrespect to the latter players, they are not the world beaters Torres, Suarez and Alonso were, and Liverpool slowly fell further down the ladder time progressed.

So will Danny Ings be a household name at Anfield? Or will he fail to make an impact, like many before him?

Since the Fenway Sports Group took over the club in October 2010, 34 players have signed with the club. A large majority of them with high hopes and expectations, but little success.

While they have discovered the odd gem (£8.5 million for Coutinho seems like a bargain now) and created the famous ‘SAS’ (Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez) partnership, most of their signings have failed to live up their potential.

Along with the aforementioned players, Joe Allen, Stewart Downing and Diego Lovren are examples of players who excelled in the EPL with other clubs but could not reproduce that form in the Liverpool jersey.

This poses the question whether or not the former Burnley forward will be able to make the cut at the club? Is Danny Ings a 15-20 goal a season striker? Is he a hitman who will help Liverpool return to Champions League football?

There is no denying the talent and untapped potential that Ings possesses and playing at a club such as Liverpool should strengthen his game, something that he needs to do as soon as possible.

In the 2013/14 season, Liverpool netted 101 times, with the deadly partnership of Suarez and Sturridge helping out with 52 goals. Just one season later, Brendan Rodgers’ men only scored 52 goals in total, with an injury plagued Sturridge finishing with fout and new signings Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert scoring just three between them.

A decisive factor in whether or not the young forward will be a success at the club will depend on where he falls under the manager’s plans.

Lambert was always going to be a back up to the starting squad, but Balotelli was given chance after chance to replicate such form he produced in Italyand former English champions Manchester City, before falling out of favour and only making 16 league appearances.

Now reportedly seeking a way out of his contract, Raheem Sterling scored seven goals. Although he is not a natural forward, he had to fill the role many times to suffice for the lack of strike power.

So there is room for Ings to be a success at the club, but he will have to take whatever chances he gets to prove himself. The metric of a good striker is the amount of goals scored. Former Kop hero Torres was an intelligent forward with a huge price tag, but only scored 20 goals in his three-in-a-half season stint at Chelsea.

The Red half of Merseyside have hosted some of the best strikers in the competition’s history, from “King” Kenny Dalglish to the man they called “God” Robbie Fowler.

One of the positives that Ings has is that he was signed on a free transfer, so there is no price for him to be judged on and he is not a big name in world football, so there is not as big of a reputation to live up to.

There is no reason why the 22-year-old cannot be a success at the club, but Liverpool’s recent history with recruitment there is also a chance that he will be another name on the list of players who just could not make it at Anfield.

  1. I Danny Ings a good signing for LFC? In what regards? The fact is, he is a quality signing for a bit part back up, but not a good signing at all if LFC thinks he is the answer to the goal scoring woes! For heavens sake he’s on a free and the only obstacle is the 6m to Burnley1 hardly marquee numbers and not exactly a well kept secret hidden talent!
