On a fine night in Parramatta, two clubs vying for a possie on the hallowed summit of the A-League met on the turf, in front of a fine collection of impassioned onlookers. Romeo Castelan and Craig Goodwin lined up as foes in mouthwatering fashion on their shared flank. The drums from the red and black bulk kept the evening boogieing along nicely; heartbeats were thumping just as loudly, with so much at stake here.

A hugely contentious decision marked the opening waurter hour of this match, as Liam Reddy charged out at Bruce Kamau, just as the striker tapped the ball past him outside the penalty area. The whistle pierced the air, and as Kamau rose to his feet, he was greeted with a cheese slice, for diving. Yes, contentious indeed, and the home crowd were a little sheepish for the next few minutes, relived and a little baffled at their luck. Had Kamau launched his body before contact arrived? Does Reddy’s trailing hand prevent the striker from landing? It was a moment that might have been pivotal, but wasn’t.

The first half ended, as it always must, locked in a terse stalemate. Only flickers of attacking quality were present; it’s as if the Kamau decision had startled both teams into over-wariness, ironically enough. The second half was much the same, barring the occasional Castalan moment; the Wanderers attacker created two clear-cut chances for his teammates, but they were found terribly wanting both times. The game slipped into a straitjacket, and struggled towards the final whistle. Mark Bridge had a diamond-encrusted chance to win it at the death, but pulled his shot wide. 0-0 it ended, and the Wanderers went top by a solitary point.
