Sydney FC have won their first game since round four with a 1-0 win over Newcastle Jets at Allianz Stadium.
In front of a mere 9,155 fans – and a completely empty bay where the Cove are usually situated – both teams came out desperate for a win.
The first half saw the Sky Blues’ marquee man, Filip Holosko swquander chance after chance. His first shot hit the post after some great work down the left from Alex Brosque and Andrew Hoole.
Sydney continued to find space on the left wing, and Holosko continued to miss chances, with Milos Ninkovic’s pass in the box finding it’s way through legs to find the Slovakian but he couldn’t pull the shot off quickly enough and it was well wide.
Holosko then aimed two chances straight at Newcastle goalkeeper Mark Birighitti – one off his head and one with his boot.
The 0-0 scoreline was taken into half time, and at the restart Newcastle came out firing. Milos Trifunovic was able to cut back to Enver Alivodic but his shot blasted over the cross bar.
Sydney finally got there goal after back to back scoreless draws through Alex Brosque. The captain was released and confidently slotted the ball into the far corner, across Birighitti.
Newcastle pushed late for an equaliser but Sydney earned all three points, which sees them join Melbourne Victory and Western Sydney Wanderers on 16 points.

For a bay that's usually bursting with energy, seeing the absence of The Cove tonight has really driven this home. pic.twitter.com/TyllcVuVFa

Atmosphere? There is none here tonight.

To be fair, this Sydney crowd is a combination of the boycott, and the awful, uninspired football Sydney have been playing lately #SYDvNEW

Sounds like the @FFA has hired about 30 people to chant Sydney at the game to create some atmosphere #SYDvNEW
