Adelaide came to Melbourne and won, with a late goal, for the first time in five years.

This match burst forth, in spite of the cringe-worthy countdown to kick off. Fahid Ben Khalfallah went down in the box after 30 seconds and Leigh Broxham stung the palms of Eugene Galekovic a few minutes later. Adelaide, running with as much feverish enthusiasm, if a little less precision, did well to keep pace. At a match that endured a heavy police presence, with double bag-checks and security wand-downs, these two teams were determined to provide as much breathless entertainment as they could.

Archie Thompson nearly rolled back the years, as far back as he was leaning when he volleyed Gui Finkler’s well-aimed cross, but it flew just over. Danny Vukovic was relieved to feel an Adelaide shot, coming a few moments later, thud safely into the soft centre of his breadbasket. Marcelo Carrusca and Craig Goodwin were charging down the flanks, and with Geria earning an early yellow, these looked the likely areas from which Adelaide might profit. Meanwhile, Gui Finkler smashed a free kick against the woodwork – this time, the ball didn’t bounce down OVER the line – and the home fans nearly exploded- no, not in a flarey way – in the stands.

The second half fell with melancholy, as Autumn leaves fall from the tree, into a sleepy pattern; every Victory attack was stifled by the Adelaide defence, and every Adelaide attack was stifled by, mainly, the superb Matthieu Delpierre. An ebb and flow of unfulfilled attack after unfulfilled attack rocked the crowd into a restless slumber, with only the sparkling footwork of Carrusca to rouse them. The match drifted fitfully, with the industry of Goodwin, at both ends, punctuating what appeared to be an inevitable 0-0 draw. But then, a jolt, late in the episode; Craig Goodwin burst through the heart of the Victory midfield, and from the chaos his work created, Bruce Kamau ended up with the ball alone in the far side of the box. His shot, deflected by a Victory defender, gave Vukovic no chance, and it sailed just inside the post. Goodwin was unable to celebrate; he had suffered an almighty blow to the head, by Daniel Georgievski’s dangerously errant knee. Adelaide held on, winning at AAMI Park for the first time in five years.
