Manchester United will host their nearest rivals Manchester City in what is the most eagerly awaited Premier League derby of the season.

Two of the best managers in the modern game will go head-to-head once again, continuing their rivalry after their time in Spain.

Besides having two world-class managers on the sidelines, the derby will also feature of flurry of stars on the pitch. Both clubs have already shown big signs of improvement since last season, having won their opening three fixtures.

The game has all the makings of a tense yet exciting tie and if the recent past is anything to go by, we are in for a cracker.

Touchline battle

The reignited rivalry of Guardiola and Mourinho was one of the most highly anticipated features of the new season. Tactical masterminds in quite contrasting manners, their battle has been much more than just the final score.

While Mourinho’s tactics appear more defensive in nature, Guardiola has been known for his free-flowing attacking football. The two have faced each other numerous times over the years, for a few different clubs as well. For most of those 16 occasions, it has been the Spanish manager who has come out on top.

But Mourinho will be confident ahead of the derby, considering he has one of the best squads in the country at his disposal. The former Chelsea boss has only managed to beat his counterpart on three occasions and the derby provides an excellent platform for the 53-year-old to increase that number. Mourinho does have one slight advantage over Guardiola though, having won just one more trophy than the Spaniard (22 and 21, respectively).

Aguero gone

One of the biggest headaches on Guardiola’s mind will be Sergio Aguero’s suspension. The Argentine pulled out of national duty due to an injury problem and has been rubbed out of the derby.

Aguero missing out and the absence of Wilfried Bony from the first team this season indicates Guardiola could opt for young Kalechi Iheanacho to lead the line. While the Nigerian has been excellent in the past year or so, he will have big shoes to fill when facing United.

Wayne Rooney to step up?

The last couple of years have witnessed a constant fluctuation in Wayne Rooney’s form. The England international is one of the most decorated footballers in the world today. Already his country’s top goalscorer, Rooney is not far away from becoming Manchester United’s top scorer as well, thus managing to beat Sir Bobby Charlton to both records.

But it is the 30-year-old’s recent form that has taken the shine out of an otherwise brilliant forward. The former Everton talent took a beating from critics for his disappointing performances at Euro 2016 and have carried on this season. Despite starting every game so far and getting on the scoresheet once, Rooney has not reached the level he is capable of. Poor touches, bad passes and an unusual lack of sharpness seem to sum up his recent form.

But if there is one stage where Rooney loves to shine, it is the Manchester Derby. Rooney has been the Sky Blues’ tormentor in the past and will be hopeful to turn around his form against the local rivals.
