Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has said that he harboured doubts on Juventus’ performances this season prior to the shock 2-1 loss to Inter Milan on Saturday.

After defeating Sassuolo 3-1 at Juventus Stadium, plaudits were quick to laud Maximiliano Allegri’s squad as a clear frontrunner in the title race, but Buffon said this performance was far from perfect. Since that match, Juventus drew 0-0 with Sevilla in the Champions League opener, before Inter duo Mauro Icardi and Ivan Perisic consigned the Bianconeri to defeat at the San Siro with second half goals.

“There was a lot of praise after our win over Sassuolo, but I had a few doubts and perplexities,” Buffon told Sky Sport Italia. “We conceded four huge chances to Sassuolo in a home game and I don’t think that a team like ours, whose solidity is its biggest strength, cannot afford to let other sides create three, four or five chances.

“This year, unlike previous years, the difference has been the number of goals we’ve conceded. We’ve already let in four in four games so we particularly need to improve on this.”

Buffon, 38, concedes that Juventus were far from their best against Inter, but lamented at the speed at which the game was lost.

“The defeat is painful because even though we didn’t play well for 65 minutes and were having problems playing the ball about, we had nevertheless managed to keep ourselves in front,” he said.

“A team like ours cannot and must not lose a game like this in 25 minutes.

“But I think that it’s normal to have highs and lows at the start of the season and I believe in the end that this defeat will do us good.”
