February Rivals roundup – who were the stars this month on AUSFIFA?

The fifth season of the PS4 AVPL kicked off last night but before we all immerse ourselves in another engrossing instalment of the competition, let’s take a look back at the month of February.

Who were the best performers? The clinical strikers? And the goalkeepers who could not be passed?

Disclaimer: All players mentioned must meet the minimum games played for WPA.

In the month of February it was Black Bull that steamrolled the competition. Playing under an alias club named Black Calf, they earned themselves the favourites tag for AVPL season 5 with an imperious record of 75 wins, 15 draws and eight losses. Moreover, they averaged an incredible 2.9 goals per game in the process.

Siiii!

Football is often defined by its ability to capture and captivate an audience. There are no players better at doing this than the goalscorers – the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Dino Kresinger. Unsurprisingly the most awe-inspiring forwards of the month all belong to Black Bull. After only recently picking up FIFA 16, Beware_Danger (affectionately known as B, because Black Bull members hate multiple syllables) has shown that form is temporary and class is permanent. In his 34 Rivals games this month, he blasted the net 37 times, averaging 1.1 goals per game and taking out the inaugural ‘Siiii!’ award for the greatest goal-to-game ratio of the month. Joining Beware_Danger at the pinnacle of AUSFIFA’s best forwards are teammates Raheem (aka R) and Aaron (aka A). Both players boast an impressive average of 0.9 goals per game – Raheem scoring 84 goals in 91 games and Aaron 76 goals in 83 games.

What does it take to be an AUSFIFA manager?

Play-a-maker

As impressive as goalscorers are, what would they be without the proper service? These are the creators, the dishmasters as they are known within the AVPL – the players that make any team infinitely more threatening with their creativity and vision. The clear frontrunner and proud (maybe…I’m not sure if he cares) recipient of February’s ‘Play-a-maker’ award is AUSFIFA’s self-appointed ‘King of Rome’, TheEmden2.

Having played with Emden for a majority of my time on PS4, it is clear that he is the best playmaker on AUSFIFA. Approaching a game of football like a gladiator, Emden used his grit, determination, and, most importantly, his vision to amass 74 assists in 89 games for the month of February. A polarising and enigmatic individual; his quality cannot be ignored. Emden wasn’t the only dangerous play-a-maker of the month, however. Sprint-enthusiast, and Neverlusin’s own, Shelfordson, recorded 29 assists in 38 games and further cemented himself as one of AUSFIFA’s most effective forwards.

Zlatan approves

To round off the attacking-oriented analysis of this month’s Rivals summary is the awarding of the Zlatan approves accolade, which goes to the player with the greatest ratio of overall goal-contributions (goals and assists). Where this is heading is pretty obvious as Black Bull have demolished the competition for the month, with one player rising above all others to prove that he deserves Zlatan’s approval. This man is AUSFIFA’s most decorated PS4 H2H player and he continues to showcase his ability within the Pro Clubs scene. This month, ‘Zlatan approves’ of Raheem.

Given his preference to literally pass off the chance to score an open goal, his 63 assists in 98 games is not shocking by any means. However, the absolute ruthlessness in which he has approached the month of February has been a slight change of pace for the forward. Raheem used his usual trickery to terrorise defences and coupled it with an immaculate eye for goal, claiming 86 goals in 98 games. Overall, Raheem ended the month with an astounding 1.52 goal contributions per game.

Bone-crunchers

Who wants their leg broken? In the event that anyone actually answers ‘me’ to that question, these are the droids you’re looking for. I present to you, the ‘Bone-cruncher’ award. This award is given to the player who averages the most tackles per game. In that endeavour, one man stands out from the pack for February – AUSFIFA’s stealthiest masturbator, Fapfapninja. Using his superior Asian internet (cheers for the 10mb/s Telstra), anticipation and god-like ball-stealing ability, Fapfap collected 244 tackles in 63 games – an average of 3.9 tackles per game. I can only assume that he also ran the length of the field, skill dribbling each opponent after dispossessing them, making Fapfap’s performances all the more impressive.

Other impressive performances for the month include Brunei’s greatest ever export, Ruud, and everyone’s favourite Playnation member with a warrior-related PSN, Red Warrior. Both players impressed in February with Ruud averaging 3.3 tackles per game accumulating 418 tackles in 128 games, and Red Warrior averaging 3.2 tackles per game with 189 tackles from 59 games. All three players will be looking to bring that form into season 5 of the PS4 AVPL.

Soil your own sheets

In football, the old adage is that a great attack will win you games, but a great defence will win you championships. This is just as appropriate on the virtual pitch. The following ‘Soil your own sheets’ award is for the defender that not only concedes very few goals, but regularly keeps clean sheets. February’s recipient is none other than Skidz. Contributing to 15 clean sheets in 26 games, Skidz continues to be the benchmark for defenders. Whether bringing the ball forward or camped deep within his own penalty area, Skidz exudes a sense of composure and calmness that is reminiscent of Brazil and PSG star Thiago Silva, although he prefers Nicolas Otamendi. Other defenders who have impressed in February with their ability to keep the opposition scoreless are Gazzalinga, managing 16 clean sheets in 31 games, TCE99, with 14 clean sheets in 30 games, and Massawe, amassing (hehe) 17 clean sheets in 42 games.

Golden Gloves

Fittingly, we leave the last line of defence until last – the goalkeeper. Every truly great defence is solidified by a legendary ‘keeper. Peter Schmeichel, Gianluigi Buffon, Manuel Neuer – all players that command a defensive unit to be the very best they can through example and leadership. The greatest goalkeepers put their team at ease, proving their importance by salvaging situations which had otherwise looked hopeless. The goalkeeper who has consistently done exactly that for the month of February is Twitchy. Throughout his 57 games, Twitchy has claimed 26 clean sheets; made 206 saves; and averaged less than a goal conceded per match. With such exquisite performances he earns his ‘Golden Gloves’ award. The race for the award was close and an honourable mention must go to The Empire’s, December_19. Despite not claiming the top spot, December_19 had a very impressive February, ending the month with the least average goals conceded per match on the leader-board.

Only time will tell whether the best players within Rivals can replicate that form on the grandest stage of them all. Either way, Season 5 of the PS4 AVPL is shaping up to be the best competition yet!
