Turkey and Croatia will square off in the opening clash of Group D at the Parc de Princes with both sides bidding to progress from the ‘group of death’.

Can Croatia keep their record against Turkey alive?

In the previous six meetings between the two sides, the Turkish squad has not been able to muster a victory. In fact, their most recent win against the Croatians was at the 2008 European Championships in dramatic penalty circumstances.

Coach Ante Cacic’s men were nothing short of dominant in their fixtures against the Turks in their qualifying campaign.

However will the pressure of the competition alter the outcome?

Will Turkey’s defence remain steadfast?

Croatia boast a fantastic midfield with a few threatening figures in the forward line which is also combined with the injection of several young guns who bring the extra element of speed. So in short, the Turkish defence has a lot of work ahead of it and cannot be complacent.

Indeed it was the defence which aided their progression through the qualifying stages with coach Fatih Terim’s men struggling to find the back of the net during recent matches.

The Croatians will seek to display their attacking might in the early stages of the match and the Turks must be up for the danger they will pose. Defensive concentration and solidarity is a must.

Croatia’s young guns with a chance to shine

In all his coaching experience, Cacic has created a full-strength squad of experience combined with youth.

Of course Croatian media outlets have praised the 62-year-old’s selections with beliefs high of progressing to the knockout stages. Cacic, while quietly confident, believes his side will be at its peak in two years as his host of young guns gain international experience.

The match against Turkey will likely set the tone for Croatia’s tournament and it will be an invaluable opportunity for the youngsters to have under their belt.
