Croatia head into their second group fixture against the Czech Republic as favourites following a 1-0 victory against Turkey.

Outside90’s Roanna Sanelli breaks down three factors that will be vital to tonight’s match.

Defensive partnership of Corluka and Vida

It has been mentioned on several occasions that the Croatians have the firepower in the front line, yet are seemingly weaker in defence.

However, the partnership of Vedran Corluka and Domagoj Vida was critical to the victory of coach Ante Cacic’s men in their opening game. Corluka was able to contain his opponent Cenk Tosun and minimized the space given to him, while his comrade was almost always by his side blanketing the Turk.

If this same form continues against the Czechs it could prove to be a nightmare for the opposition attack.

The skills of Ivan Perisic

The 27-year-old Croatian was easily the man of the matc against Turkey and was his side’s main creative outlet – apart from Luka Modric.

He was continually running at the opposition backline and looked threatening when on the ball.

In an attempt to bring his teammates into the game more, he continually cut inside from the flanks and provided adequate support as well as supply into the area.

Combined with the likes of Marcelo Brozovic, the Croatians were not short of crosses and opportunities.

Surprisingly strong Czech backline

It goes without saying that against the Spaniards, the Czechs had a defensive mindset from the opening whistle.

However, one would think the experience and the quality of the reigning champions would have been enough to slowly grind down the Czech back four.

This was not the case, in fact Spain scored in the final minutes of play despite some brilliant goalkeeping by Petr Cech.

Yet in this tough group it is not enough to just park the bus and if the squad wants to progress, they must place pressure early and continuously on the Croatians and really force the initiative.
