Drawn in Group A with France, Switzerland and Albania, the Romanians will need all hands on deck if they hope to progress in Euro 2016 and their key players need to step up.

One of the most important names in their squad is captain Vlad Chiriches, who is currently playing in Serie A with Napoli.

Role in the team

Chiriches is vital for this Romania side, not just for his ability but for his influence on teammates. The 26-year-old plays as a central-defender and his six-foot stature certainly aids him in that regard. He featured as captain of Romania in 2013 and has since recorded a total of 38 appearances for his country. The defender is crucial for the Tricolorii’s hopes in the Euro, as he will be able to bring stability at the back, as well as a bit of mental steel through his experience as a skipper.

Recent form

He has had a turbulent time in his club career. Chiriches joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2013 following strong seasons in the Romanian top-flight and managed 27 appearances over the course of two seasons. He was then shipped off to Napoli in 2015, where he has only made seven appearances during 2015-16, as Maurizio Sarri’s men finished second in Serie A. However, Chiriches’ form for his country has been much more promising, having played eight Euro qualifying matches and maintaining a clean sheet in all but one of them.

Conclusion

Romania have capable players for the upcoming Euro as shown by their key defender and captain Chiriches. With a leader at the helm of their backline, they have maintained an excellent record in the qualifying stages and one that they are hoping can propel them to a respectable finish in the showcase tournament.
