Having been at the helm of a remarkable 2015-16 Borussia Dortmund turnaround, Marco Reus will look to make up for lost time with Germany at Euro 2016.

Role in the team

In a Die Mannschaft setup that appears to be very midfield-heavy, the man nicknamed ‘Woody Woodpecker’ provides a deadly finishing touch that will keep opposition teams guessing when defending. As Mario Gomez is Joachim Löw’s only chosen natural striker, more viable targets will be required in the 18-yard box to make sure that the German attack does not become limited and predictable.

Perhaps more admirable than Reus’ goal scoring ability though is his overall expertise on the field. The type of player that never seems to tire, in 2015-16 he rarely missed a minute in the Bundesliga. His consumate passing of the ball is another admirable quality, averaging near 83% percent accuracy throughout the recent season.

Recent form

2015-16 was a season where Reus’ abilities were truly able to shine, at a time when club side Borussia Dortmund needed a shot in the arm. With new manager Thomas Tuchel re-invigorating a side which was fortunate to finish seventh the season prior, the attacking combinations of Reus, along with Henrikh Mkhitaryan, İlkay Gündoğan or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saw the BVB return to their spot as Bundesliga contenders, while also making it to the Europa League final four and the final of the German Cup.

Individually Reus amounted a total of 12 goals in the league and would pop-up at vital times in the cup competitions as well.

Conclusion

The 26-year-old was absent from the nation’s successful 2014 World Cup campaign due to injury, so this time he will be desperate to take his country all the way through to glory. One of many German stars who have been molded by Löw over many years, Euro 2016 could be remembered as the ‘Woody Woodpecker show’.
