A freak injury to star Sweden midfielder Albin Ekdal could have the potential to throw Erik Hamrén’s 23-man squad into disarray.

Despite being named in the squad, the Hamburg midfielder is in serious doubt for the tournament after suffering a deep cut to his back after falling on to a glass table top at the weekend.

“He has to rest completely now – we don’t know how long for,” Hamrén said.

“He might not be in the squad at the finals – it depends on his recovery process.”

Headlining the squad is captain and mercurial PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimović, referred to by Hamrén as “our only world-class player”.

If Sweden are to make it to the knockout phase, the coach said the Paris striker “needs to be on top form and the team need to play three matches at 100%”, adding: “If we get through, anything can happen.”
