Our series of January transfer window wrap-ups continues with a look at the business done by top four hopefuls Tottenham Hotspur.

Who arrived?

With the setup at Tottenham finding so much success at the moment, it is unsurprising that the club have not made any big signings this winter. However, it has been reported that the side were chasing striker Moussa Dembele to act as cover for Harry Kane. A mixture of sources said that Dembele would leave the Cottagers, although Fulham have made it clear the French forward will not be sold.

The Spurs have brought in Shilow Tracey on an under-18 scholarship from National League side Ebbsfleet United.

Who departed?

Out of favour winger Andros Townsend completed a £12 million move to Newcastle United late in January. The estranged England international has only appeared eight times under Argentine manager Mauricio Pochettino and has only three Premier League appearances as a substitute this season.

Townsend also had an altercation with Tottenham’s fitness coach back in November and was subsequently dropped for the Europa game that followed. Spurs fans will be very happy with a decent fee for the winger, who came up through the North London club’s academy. As an England international, and along with the signing of former Liverpool and Swansea man Jonjo Shelvey, the Geordies will be very content with their January signings.

Who can help the team?

It was rumored that the Lilywhites were in talks with West Bromwich Albion over the sale of Saido Berahino, who has been an interest of those at White Hart Lane for a while. Tottenham are keen for another striker should Kane become unavailable through injury, while Berahino’s style would also make him a complimentary partner for the 22-year-old.

If Tottenham can bag either Berahino or Moussa Dembele in the next window it would be a huge asset for the team and Kane, who is rarely rested when it comes to the Premier League. The sale of Townsend to the Magpies will supply good funding in the search for another striker.

Overall rating

The January transfer window has been relatively quiet for Tottenham this year. With most of the talent seem to be coming from academies and rising through the ranks, it is no surprise that Mauricio Pochettino has not set out to make big signings left, right and centre. However, it is necessary that they sign a striker,  Harry Kane suffer an injury or be lured elsewhere. A reported £18 million bid still was not enough to secure Berahino’s services, but expect the English under-21 international to stay on the White Hart Lane radar.
