The upcoming match between modern-day rivals Chelsea and Liverpool is already shaping up to be one of the most important of the new Premier League season.

We have had a go at selecting the best combined team between the teams ahead of the highly anticipated battle at Stamford Bridge on Friday night.

Did we get it right?

Thibaut Courtois – Goalkeeper – Chelsea

A fantastic goalkeeper and has proved it for many years – commanding, strong and a great awareness of the situation. Chelsea appear strong defensively this season and you cannot help but think this man is one of the key reasons why.

XI

Nathaniel Clyne – Right-back – Liverpool

Known as Mr Consistent for the Reds. Week in, week out, he shows why Liverpool were keen to secure his services from Southampton before the beginning of last season. A modern day full-back, Clyne gets up and down with great energy and pace, but most importantly, he can defend.

Joel Matip – Centre-back – Liverpool

When you consider Chelsea have brought back David Luiz for £30 million from PSG, a free transfer from Schalke to Liverpool for Matip could prove to be one of the best bits of business by any club this season. Despite still being quite young at 25, he has a vast amount of experience and will prove to be a huge asset for the Reds this season.

Gary Cahill – Centre-back – Chelsea

One of the key leaders in Chelsea’s defence. His ability to dominate aerially makes him such an imposing player and his ability to defend while the ball is on the ground continues to see him picked seasonally for the Blues.

Cesar Azpilicueta – Left-back – Chelsea

Talking purely technique, this Spaniard is one of the finest defenders in the Premier League. His consistency and ability to dominate the left-hand side of defence makes him one of Chelsea’s most valuable defenders.

N’Golo Kante – Central-midfield – Chelsea

A player every club would have liked after his efforts in the centre of the park last season for Leicester City. People look at Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez when it comes to why Leicester City won the league, but ultimately this man was the key. His ability to run and control the tempo of a football match sets him apart from most central-midfielders in the Premier League.

Jordan Henderson – Central-midfield – Liverpool

Cops a lot of unwarranted stick. He is by no means a fantastic footballer, but Henderson is crucial to what Liverpool are trying to establish. When Emre Can comes back into the Liverpool side, we will see Henderson play more freely as the box-to-box player he naturally is. So far though, he has showed his versatility this season by playing an unfamiliar deeper role.

Sadio Mane – Attacking-midfield – Liverpool

Has started this season brilliantly. Many questioned the price tag at first, but Mane has made everyone involved in the footballing world forget about that very quickly. His pace and power have completely transformed Liverpool for the better. With that being the case, he so far has two goals and one assist from his three appearances in the Premier League this season.

Philippe Coutinho – Attacking-midfield – Liverpool

He is called the little magician for a reason. Coutinho goes from strength to strength each season and has arguably become Liverpool’s most important player. So far this campaign, he has two goals from his four appearances. His ability to win a game sets him apart from most, but consistency is a key issue for him to overcome.

Eden Hazard – Attacking-midfield – Chelsea

Struggled for most of last season, but did manage to find some form towards the end. So far this, Hazard has started strongly with two goals from his four appearances. His ability to create and score make him one of the finest attacking-midfield players in the Premier League. It was no that long ago he was the Premier League player of the season.

Diego Costa – Striker – Chelsea

Last season he struggled, but so far this, Costa looks to have found the form that was crucial in Chelsea’s 2014-15 title-winning season. Four goals in four appearances so far for Chelsea’s talisman, he has hit the ground running. If he can control his aggression and passion, he will be key for Chelsea in competing for the title this season.
