Liverpool midfielder Emre Can is anticipating a fresh start this season as he continues his recovery from injury.

The 23-year-old returned to action with the Reds during their 3-0 victory over Derby County in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night. He had been absent due to an injury suffered in the previous round of the tournament against Burton.

The German is aware that he has his work cut out if he is to return to Jurgen Klopp’s first XI.

“I knew before the season I was not fit for the first game, so it was normal I didn’t play and was on the bench,” said Can.

“I played my first game against Burton and I got injured, which was a little bit unlucky, so now I have to get my fitness back and see what happens. I have to show myself again.

“Every player has to start from zero and myself as well.”

Liverpool are one of the in form teams of the Premier League, boasting headline results against Arsenal, Leicester and Chelsea this season. This has developed from a strong midfield partnership between Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana and Gini Wijnaldum.

Can is proud of his teammates’ work.

“Adam, Hendo and Gini have played well together – you can see by the results and the good football,” he said.

“I saw it as well myself (during training) as I play with them in the team and I was very happy for them.

“We bought very good players and everyone is nearly fit – we have a strong squad. If you saw the last few games we were very strong and we have to keep it up.”
