Football Federation Australia Chief Executive David Gallop believes that expanding the A-League is a must, if we are to continue growing the game right here in our own backyard.

There have been continued calls for expansion within the national competition to accommodate for a greater variety of fan groups.

And Gallop confirmed the FFA have plans in place to expand beyond the 10 teams currently in the A-League.

“Ten teams is not enough to have in our competition, expansion will come sooner rather than later”, Gallop told reporters at the A-League season launch.

Gallop’s comments come after Ange Postecoglou told the Daily Football Show last week he supported the idea of further expanding the A-League.

“I guess before we start talking promotion/relegation, the first question we need to ask is that going to grow the game? If it is, then we go ahead with it. As I said, I think expansion comes before promotion/relegation,” he said.

“We know expansion happens. It may happen with existing clubs or it may happen with a new entity as we saw with Western Sydney, an experiment that worked out very, very well for the game.

“The growth is there, we’ve just got to make sure that wherever the game is being loved, there’s games representing it.”
