Winger Craig Goodwin has become the third Red to move on following their maiden grand final victory, joining Dutch club Sparta Rotterdam after a sparkling season in Adelaide.

Twenty-four-year-old Goodwin capped off a breakthrough, double-winning season by being crowned as United’s club champion, in which he scored four goals and notched up as many assists.

Having joined Adelaide in 2014, Goodwin’s contract was due to expire, and has opted to join Dutch football’s oldest club in Sparta, due to play in the Eredivise next season.

The South Australian product said the time was right for him to roll the dice in Europe after a successful stay with his hometown club.

“It’s been an amazing two seasons and to finish on a high by winning the double with my team mates, but also winning the Members’ Player of the Year award and the Aurelio Vidmar Club Champion Award, it’s a great honour for me as a local boy,” Goodwin said.

“It’s been two years that I’ll never forget because I won trophies with my hometown club and helped to make history with them as well.

“I’m 24 years old and I’ve gained some great experience in the A-League, but I feel it’s time to try my luck in Europe and try and progress as a player as much as possible.

“I’ve always had aspirations to play at the highest level possible and I feel like this is the step that I need to take to also represent my country on a regular basis too.”

Pablo Sanchez and Bruce Kamau preceded Goodwin in departing the club.
