Can Gonzalo Higuain reach the heights of Serie A goalscoring supremacy?

After 14 games Gonzalo Higuain currently sits at the top of the Serie A scorers list on 12 goals. The highest ever total of goals scored was 36 by Gino Rossetti all the way back in the 1928-29 season.

Although still a long way off this record and a long way to go in the season, Higuain is off to a very strong start and although always being good for Napoli, is in a real purple patch at the moment and almost ever decent chance he is getting he finishes.

If anyone needs any reassuring of this fact, all you need to do is look at the first goal he scored against Inter Milan last week. After a chest down from right-winger Jose Callejon, Higuain managed to shoot, pretty much with his back to goal and still easily beat the keeper at the near post.

Although people always say keepers shouldn’t be beaten at the near post this one was practically unstoppable just like a crop of the dozen goals that Higuain has scored.

As former Manchester City coach and current Inter Milan coach said after the match, “Gonzalo Higuain in Italy is like Lionel Messi to the rest of the world”. At the rate he is scoring his goals this is hard to argue as he currently sits 2 goals clear of anyone else in the league, leaving some of the world’s best trailing at the moment.

For those defences that are coming up against Higuain, with Bologna up next to face the in-form man, it is tough to plan against him. The goals he scores although not always ones of the highlight reel are always quality finishes while those on the highlight reels seem to come out of nowhere with sometimes very little a defence can do.

At the same time as Higuain is getting all this glory don’t forget, although very few will, about the work being done for him by his midfield and wide players support. With Insigne in the team on the left and a strong midfield he is assisted by all these players and if Napoli continue to put in performances like those against Inter or Lazio earlier in the season we could see Higuain reaching the high 20’s if not actually make a push for that Serie A record of goals in a season.

Looking forward with Napoli still improving and the goals still pouring in, as they reach for the title hopes putting an expectation on Higuain that is realistic will be looking towards about 25+ goals and some stellar performances could push that number higher and make him a very sought after player at the end of the season if not during the winter transfer period.
