Reigning champions Bayern Munich maintained their 100% winning record this season with a 3-0 victory over this season’s surprise package SV Darmstadt 98 thanks to goals from Arturo Vidal, Kingsley Coman and Sebastian Rode.
Bayern Munich looked to establish their dominance over Darmstadt as they controlled the pace, tempo and possession of the first half with crisp and fluid passing, meaning the defenders could not help but chase shadows.
Coman and Costa were constant menaces on both flanks with Rode, Kimmich and Vidal dictating the game in the midfield with the only attacker looking out of place being Mario Gotze. Bayern Munich’s possession paid off in the 30th minute as they finally cracked Darmstadt’s back line. As he would do the entire game, Douglas Costa used his pace and trickery to cut inside off the right only to tee up Vidal who smashed his shot off of Mathenia’s left-hand post.
Darmstadt almost responded in the best possible way three minutes later when some hesitancy between Boateng and Alaba allowed Stroh-Engel through, only for his effort to be stopped by Manuel Neuer. Darmstadt were punished further in the second half when, after some good work by Rode down the right-hand side, Kingsley Coman was set up and stroked the ball into the net.
Sixty seconds later and it was three when Rode was sent through. After his initial effort struck the post, the 24-year-old composed himself and poked the ball into the empty net to secure the win and three points for the German heavyweights.
