One thing that Liverpool certainly will not be doing for the remainder of the summer transfer window is investing in centre-backs, if Brendan Rodgers’ firm words are anything to go by.

The Reds’ well-documented troubles at the back last campaign crippled their push for a top four finish, however, Rodgers is content with his quota in central-defence.

The Northern Irishman believes that his defensive contingent for the upcoming 2015-16 Premier League season is already settled, as Liverpool prepare themselves for a hugely important campaign.

“We’re fine for centre-halves,” Rodgers said.

“We’ve got Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho who started tonight, plus Dejan Lovren and Kolo Toure. And now we’ve got Joe Gomez, the young kid who go in there at centre-half.”

While Liverpool have focused heavily on increasing their goalscoring stocks this summer, there is many who believe that neglecting the heart of defence could prove fatal.

One must assume that the success of the Reds’ defence will fall squarely on the fitness and continuity of having a settled back four.

If injuries curtail their ability to get first-choice defenders on the pitch, then these words may come back to haunt Liverpool and their under-pressure manager.
