Sevilla prevailed as 3-1 winners against Liverpool at St. Jakob-Park in Basel to make it their third consecutive Europa League title.

Best performers

Coke (Sevilla) – The key creative source for Sevilla. While he struggled in the first period, he decided the contest thereafter. His clever diagonal run and shot saw the move end with Mignolet picking the ball out of the net as Sevilla went ahead, before putting a nail in the Reds’ coffin to make it 3-1.

Kevin Gameiro (Sevilla) – Quiet in the first half bar an attempted bicycle kick that was just wide. He scored the equaliser just 18 seconds into the second half which helped his side on the way to a comprehensive victory. He was in the right place at the right time and troubled Liverpool’s defence with his sharp movement.

Mariano Ferreira (Sevilla) – His run from the second half kick-off was what ultimately sparked the remarkable turnaround from Sevilla. His nutmeg on Alberto Moreno was brilliant, following it up with a perfect pass for Gameiro to tap it in. His runs forward throughout proceedings were key to Sevilla’s huge win.

Honourable mentions go to Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana and Steven N’Zonzi.

Worst performers

Alberto Moreno (Liverpool) – Had a shocking match nothing really went right for him. His clearances were poor and he was beaten with ease by Mariano’s nutmeg which lead to the Sevilla comeback. Mariano caused Moreno significant grief during the second half. The Liverpool full-back struggled defensively all night, and lost possession on numerous occasions while his positional sense was lackluster.

James Milner (Liverpool) – Did not deliver the performance his side needed and was overrun as Sevilla took full control. It was a sub par performance from Liverpool’s leading assist maker, losing possession countless times.

Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool) – Incredibly quiet throughout. The Brazilian failed to influence his side in any major way. The Reds needed more from a player of his calibre. His distribution was poor and he didn’t make any key passes or shots.
