Ange Postecoglou: Socceroos in China have work cut out for them

Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou has told the Daily Football Show that he won’t begrudge players for moving to the Chinese Super League, but says they have their work cut out for them to ensure they continue to progress as individuals.

“Being signed [in China] is one thing and what you do with that is another. That’ll be the challenge for all our boys there to push on individually irrespective to the standard of the league,” he said.

“What I’m looking for is how they’re performing and whether their game continues to develop.”

Postecoglou’s remarks were off the back of recent comments made by Trent Sainsbury on the Daily Football Show, where the Socceroo refuted the claims of critics that his move to China was the wrong option for him.

“Everyone’s entitled to their opinion. But these days, just because you’ve got an opinion, it doesn’t mean you’re right,” Sainsbury said at the time.

Macca (Daniel McBreen) said his bit, Adrian [Leijer} said his bit and I’m sure everyone else has got their bit to say, but at the end of the day, I don’t care what they think, it’s what I do. The money on offer in China is too good to turn down.”

The Socceroos boss said that while he won’t begrudge Sainsbury for his move seemingly in the peak of his career, he did hint that the pressure may be even higher on the 24-year-old than it was in Europe.

“Now Trent is in the situation where he’s at a club that, as he rightly says and we can’t begrudge him for it, that have paid a lot of money for him,” he said.

“With that though comes extra pressure because the expectations are that he’ll have to perform at a very, very high level.”

“It’s going to be a good test for him and even though the league isn’t probably as strong as where he was at, I’m sure the microscope on him will be greater than what it was at Zwolle where he just one of a number of foreigners.”
