Sydney FC and Socceroos defender Alex Wilkinson says the Sky Blues are keen to make amends this season coming off the back off a disappointing 2015/16 season.

Speaking to Friday’s Daily Football Show, Wilkinson says his new club have high expectations of themselves heading into the new season.

“I feel personally that the squad is pretty strong, and we will be looking to challenge for all three titles this season,” he said.

“The boys are determined to put in a much better season than they did last year. Hopefully me and the other guys coming forward can help that happen.

“If there is no expectation externally, we put the pressure on ourselves internally to perform in every competition.

“Being at a club like Sydney you are expected to do well every year, not only challenge for finals but challenge for the top of the table as well.”

Wilkinson returned home from Korea last season, to link up with Melbourne City where he added much needed depth to their defence.

The move north to Sydney sees the defender link up with Graham Arnold who coached the defender during his time at the Central Coast Mariners which for a smoother transition.

“A lot of it is quite familiar which is good, I’ve worked with him before and I’ve worked with a lot of the staff before, everything has been pretty similar,”  he said.

“Arnie is a great tactician; he places a lot of emphasis on the tactical side of the game. That definitely hasn’t changed.

“We do quite a lot of work on our own tactics. It’s great to go out on the pitch and know what is expected of you and everyone else.”

A lot of the excitement this pre-season has been around the arrival of marquee striker Bobo, and Wilkinson believes he will be a good addition to the squad.

“I haven’t seen much of him yet, but what I have seen from in training and in games he is looking pretty handing,” he said.

“I look forward to getting him out there and getting in more minutes before the season starts.”

The Sky Blues prepare to take on Blacktown City in the FFA Cup quarter-final before they kick off their A-League season with a game against rivals the Western Sydney Wanderers.
