Adelaide United’s title defence suffered another blow as Jordan Elsey was ruled out for the entirety of the 2016-17 season.

It was confirmed by the club earlier today that the defender had ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the 3-0 preseason win over Kuala Lumpur FC two weeks ago.

“Jordan has ruptured the ACL in his left knee. It was a non-contact injury,” said club doctor James Ilic.

“We’re discussed the situation with Jordan and his family about what we believe to be the best course of action, and the decision has been made that we will perform a full reconstruction as soon as possible.”

Having only made his A-League comeback late last year from the same injury, the news leaves the Reds with a number of injury worries before the start of the new season.

Sergio Cirio and Iacopo La Rocca will hopefully have recovered from a respective broken foot and fractured cheekbone for the opening game against Newcastle, however, Marcelo Carrusca’s foot injury poses more of a worry.

Elsey’s defensive partner Michael Marrone is yet to return to training after rupturing his Achilles tendon in last season’s grand final triumph.
