Reds walk away from AAMI as victors, as Bruce Kamau struck at the death.

Adelaide United have stolen all three points at the death after Bruce Kamau’s first A-League goal gave the Reds an all-important 1-0 win over the Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park tonight. The win means the Reds now remain in third spot on the ladder and are unbeaten in eleven league matches, while the Victory suffered their first home loss in ten encounters. Here are the three best – and worst – players from tonight’s fixture.

Top Three Performers

Dylan McGowan (Adelaide United) – No surprises to see a centre-half named after that game, but a clean sheet against the Champions on their own patch is no mean feat and McGowan was at the heart of tonight’s effort. He just edges out centre-back partner Jordan Elsey, but deserves it on the basis of his man-marking effort of Besart Berisha. Has been developing nicely this season and this is arguably his performance of the season.

Gui Finkler (Melbourne Victory) – Backed up his superb Melbourne Derby performance with another great match tonight. The Brazilian was allegedly ropeable with his omission from Victory’s Asian Champions League squad and has sent a message with his last two performances. Was at the forefront of most of Victory’s attacks tonight, linked up with Fahid Ben Khalfallah extremely well and was unlucky to not have scored after striking the crossbar from a free kick in the first half.

Stefan Mauk (Adelaide United) – There were many contenders from the Reds and some fairly unlucky players who had to miss out but Stefan Mauk was the other standout. Mauk has been solid without being fantastic since his January transfer from Melbourne City, but tonight he was fantastic. Worked hard at both ends and never shirked his defensive responsibilities, but showed a lot more confidence going forward and looked the most likely outlet for Adelaide right until the death.

Worst Three Performers

Besart Berisha (Melbourne Victory) – A lot was expected from the Victory front three tonight but they just weren’t able to deliver, especially the big Albanian. Was it a case of Berisha having an off night or was he simply out fought and out-thought by a determined Adelaide backline? Maybe a little bit of both. Victory’s number nine struggled to get involved until late and then when presented with opportunities he appeared rushed and overplayed at times. Expect him to bounce back.

Craig Goodwin (Adelaide United) – Has been on fire as of late and got himself into really good areas high and wide tonight but just couldn’t do anything in them. Also didn’t have his crossing boots on tonight, wasting a number of balls into the area and frustrating Adelaide fans to no end. Hit the upright from an impossible angle and took a late hit from Georgievski in the second half, but definitely a hiccup for a player that has been one of Adelaide’s shining lights this season.

Daniel Georgievski (Melbourne Victory) – Very hard to find a third bad performance tonight and the Victory defender probably doesn’t deserve it for his performance as a whole. Neutralised Bruce Djite and was well positioned for any balls into the box, however he definitely should have been shown his marching orders for his late tackle on Craig Goodwin. Probably not intentional but reckless, dangerous and lucky to be not serving an automatic suspension.
